Inland Port Industry Research Report 2025

January 05, 2026

Supply Chain Canada has released the Inland Port Industry Research Report 2025, a comprehensive study examining the role inland ports play in strengthening supply chain resilience, reducing congestion, and supporting trade diversification in Western Canada.

Grounded in global best practices and informed by extensive industry engagement, the report explores how inland ports function as system extensions of seaports and rail networks—moving customs, inspection, and logistics activity inland to improve efficiency and reliability.

The study focuses on Alberta’s logistics landscape and draws on:

  • a review of international inland port models
  • three industry roundtables with Alberta-based stakeholders
  • survey data from senior supply chain decision-makers
  • policy and infrastructure analysis

Key findings highlight strong industry interest in an Alberta-anchored inland port corridor, particularly as a response to rising transportation costs, coastal congestion, rail access constraints, and ongoing trade disruption risks.

The report concludes that a multi-node, corridor-based inland port system—rather than a single-site model—offers the greatest potential to improve reliability, reduce delivery cost variability, and enhance Canada’s trade competitiveness.
